After My Divorce, I Uncovered a Family’s Dark Secret While Caring for a Paralyzed Man

After My Divorce, I Uncovered a Family’s Dark Secret While Caring for a Paralyzed Man Save

Landing in Atlanta

My rental car sputtered to a stop outside the sleek glass tower that housed ApexBio Solutions.

I stared up at the polished logo, the same name that had haunted my evenings with Christopher’s late‑night emails.

The concierge handed me a key card with a polite smile, and I felt the weight of the brass badge around my neck grow heavier.

“Ms. Miller?” a voice asked as I entered the executive suite.

Mr. Thompson stood by the window, his wheelchair positioned like a throne. His eyes were steel‑gray, scanning the cityscape.

“Rebecca, welcome,” he said, the name sounding like a courtesy rather than a confession.

When the nurse handed me the care plan, the headline caught my eye: President of ApexBio Solutions.

A surge of curiosity wrestled with skepticism. The man whose legs hadn’t moved in years now commanded a company that had been Christopher’s world.

“So you’re the CEO?” I asked, trying to keep my tone neutral.

He gave a thin smile, “Yes. And you’re here for me.”

Behind the calm surface, a storm of questions swirled—why had I been hired, and what did he expect from a woman who’d just lost a marriage?

My phone buzzed with a reminder: “Check in with the nurse at 9 p.m.” I slipped it into my pocket, feeling the familiar pull of duty.

Tonight would be the first night of a strange, uneasy partnership.

The First Night

The hallway lights hummed low as I pushed the door to Mr. Thompson’s private suite.

He gestured, and I helped him settle into the recliner, the cool silk of the sheet brushing my fingertips.

“Close the door,” he whispered, his voice barely more than a breath.

I obeyed, the click of the latch echoing in the quiet.

My phone hovered in my hand, screen lit with an incoming text I ignored.

He turned his head, eyes darting to the wall behind the bookshelf.

“There’s a safe behind this panel,” he said, voice trembling. “I’ve never told anyone.”

My breath caught. The panel swung open, revealing a narrow cavity.

He fumbled with a rusted handle, each movement strained.

“You have to trust me,” he added, the desperation raw.

When the safe finally yielded, a cold metal clink sounded as he lifted the lid.

Inside lay a single USB drive, its silver surface glinting under the lamplight.

He lifted it, hands shaking, and stared at me with a mixture of fear and determination.

“You can’t tell anyone about this,” he said, his voice barely audible.

“They will come after you.”

Mr. Thompson’s Secret Safe

When the door clicked shut, the room fell into a hush louder than any alarm.
