I Found Out My Family Was Stealing from My Daughter and Living Lavishly While She Starved

I Found Out My Family Was Stealing from My Daughter and Living Lavishly While She Starved Save

Mother's Phone, Daughter's Fear

“Your daughter's lunch money is now going to your brother,” my mother, Marlene, said through the phone.

“Derek is unemployed right now. He needs gas money for interviews. It’s just a few dollars, Serena, don’t be dramatic.”

I froze in the middle of my kitchen in Raleigh, the clatter of the dishwasher suddenly deafening.

The spoon in my hand trembled as I stared at Chloe, who sat silently at the counter, her hands hidden inside her sweater sleeves.

“Chloe,” I asked quietly, my voice barely rising above the hum of the refrigerator.

She looked up, eyes wide, the fear in them like a flash of winter light.

“When was the last time you ate a hot lunch at school?”

She stared at the countertop, voice barely a whisper. “Last Monday.”

My blood ran cold; that was ten days ago.

“What did you eat after that?” I pressed, feeling the knot in my throat tighten.

“Sometimes Ava gave me half her sandwich,” she said, tears pooling at the corners of her eyes.

“But today I was really hungry, so I took some graham crackers from my teacher’s desk.”

She started crying, and I felt the world tilt.

“I’m sorry, Mom,” she sobbed.

“Grandma said you were too busy and stressed,” I heard Marlene’s voice echoing in my memory.

“She told me not to tell you.”

“She said I had to skip lunch because Uncle Derek needed help.”

The kitchen seemed to shrink around us, the cheap linoleum feeling like a prison floor.

I slammed the phone down, but the line stayed open, my finger hovering over the red button.

“I need an accounting of every dollar you’ve taken, every cent.” I whispered, the words tasting like ash.

Chloe’s small hand slipped into mine, her grip tightening as if she could pull me out of the storm.

“Tell me what you’ve done with my money,” I demanded, the tremor in my voice betraying the fury inside.

Revealing the Debt

Marlene’s sigh was heavy, like a house settling after a quake.

“I’ve been moving the money,” she admitted, the words dragging across the line.

“Most of it went to Derek’s gas and groceries.”

Her voice cracked. “He’s been driving to interviews, to temp jobs, to whatever he thinks will get him back on his feet.”

I felt a cold knot knotting deeper in my chest.

“And the rest?” I asked, trying to keep my tone even.

There was a pause, a rustle of papers in the background, the sound of a drawer being forced open.

“I… I’ve been using what’s left to pay a loan shark,” she confessed, the words barely a whisper.

My mind raced, images of dark alleys and men with scarred faces flashing before me.

“Why didn’t you tell me?” I shouted, the anger now a roar.

She swallowed, the sound sharp against the silence.
