Clara’s Trial Begins

The courtroom smelled of stale paper and waxed wood, and the crowd seemed to press in on the narrow bench where I sat.

The judge, a gaunt man with a bark‑like voice, stared down the bench as if weighing my very soul.

Across the room, the prosecutor smiled thinly, his fingers tapping a rhythm on the lectern that sounded like a metronome of accusation.

From the balcony above, the Hamilton family watched in solemn silence; Adam’s eyes were fixed on me, while Margaret’s gaze cut like a blade.

When the clerk called the case, the bailiff’s voice rang: “The State versus Clara Ramos, for the theft of the Heart of Margaret.”

My breath caught at the name.

The Heart of Margaret was a sapphire the size of a clenched fist, its blue depths said to have been handed down from Margaret’s great‑grandmother.

It had once sat behind glass in the mansion’s private gallery, a symbol of the family’s wealth and legacy.

According to the police report, the display case was pristine—no fingerprints, no smudges, nothing to suggest a hurried hand had lifted the stone.

Yet here I was, alone, without counsel, the world’s eyes fixed upon a maid who had spent years sweeping those very same halls.

The prosecutor rose, his voice smooth as silk, “Ladies and gentlemen, the evidence is clear. A single, priceless sapphire vanished, and the only outsider who could have taken it is the defendant.”

He paused, letting his words settle like dust on the courtroom floor.

I felt the weight of every stare, the cold metal of the bench against my knees, and the distant hum of whispers from the balcony.

When I tried to speak, the judge’s stern gaze silenced me with a single, curt, “Proceed.”

Idan’s Testimony

The next moment, a small door creaked open and a boy no older than five shuffled in, clutching a torn sliver of fabric in his tiny fist.

His eyes, wide and earnest, scanned the room before landing on me, and for a heartbeat I saw the flicker of the affection he had always shown me.

“Your Honor,” the boy’s voice trembled, “I saw a shadow near the sapphire.”

He held out the torn cloth, its edge jagged, the colour of the deep blue lining that hid the secret passage behind the gallery wall.

The courtroom fell into a hush; the prosecutor’s smirk faltered, and even the judge’s stern mask cracked for a breath.

“What do you mean by ‘shadow’?” the judge asked, leaning forward, his gavel poised.

Idan’s lips quivered. “It moved quick, like a cat, and then the cloth got torn. I think someone went through the hidden door.”

A murmur rippled through the spectators; the Hamilton family exchanged uneasy glances, Margaret’s jaw tightening as if she could bite the air.

My heartbeat hammered against my ribs, each thud echoing the fear that perhaps the truth was finally surfacing.

Before I could speak, the judge slammed his gavel and declared, “Recess!”

He turned, his voice booming, “The court will reconvene after a short break.”

The doors swung shut, the balcony crowd dissolved into whispered speculation, and I was left trembling on the cold bench, the torn fabric still clutched in Idan’s small hand, pointing toward a hidden passage that might change everything.
