I’ve Kept My Mother’s Secret About Ethan for Years, and Tonight It Finally Breaks My Heart.

I’ve Kept My Mother’s Secret About Ethan for Years, and Tonight It Finally Breaks My Heart. Save

Prom Night Promise

Mom buzzed the hallway as I slipped my shoes on, the slick black leather whispering against the hardwood.

Ethan burst through the front door, his suit crisp, a bow tie flashing like a neon signal.

He cradled my corsage in one hand, the pink roses trembling in the dim light.

“You’re looking sharp,” I laughed, feeling a rush of childhood memory flood my chest.

He grinned, the same goofy smile that once told me my drawings were “potatoes with arms.”

“Promise we won’t forget the pinkie,” he said, extending his tiny finger.

I hooked my own around it, the pressure warm, the promise still alive after twelve years.

Mom lingered in the doorway, her eyes flickering between Ethan’s polished shoes and the old photograph on the mantle of us as kids, dinosaurs in the background.

“You look like a thousand dollar boy,” she whispered, voice trembling just enough to make my skin prickle.

Ethan tipped his head, “Only if you let me dance with you.”

My heart thumped louder than the music already vibrating through the house.

The Secret Looms

Mom pulled me into my room, the door clicking shut behind us with a decisive thud.

She sat on the edge of my bed, hands shaking, fingers digging into mine.

“I have to tell you something about Ethan,” she said, her voice barely a breath.

My breath hitched; the air felt thick, heavy with unspoken words.

“It’s a truth that will change everything,” she warned, eyes darting to the window where the night sky glittered like scattered diamonds.

I could hear the distant thump of bass from the prom, a reminder of the ticking clock.

“What are you saying? Mom, please—” my voice cracked, raw.

She squeezed my hands tighter, her grip a sudden anchor.

“You’ve been carrying this promise for years,” she whispered, “and now it has to be broken.”

My mind raced, images of Ethan’s childhood, his stubbornness, his hidden smiles.

Just as the room seemed to close in, the phone on the nightstand erupted with a shrill ringtone.

Mom’s eyes widened, fury flashing across her face.

She snatched the receiver, her voice rising into a harsh, angry bark.

“What? No, that can’t be—!” she shouted, the words cutting through the silence.

The call crackled, the line filled with static and a voice I didn’t recognize.

My heart pounded, waiting, as Mom’s confession hung in the air, interrupted, unfinished.

Mom’s Revelation

She pulled the chair close, her knuckles white around the armrests.

“You need to hear something,” Mom whispered, eyes flicking to the window where the night sky bruised the town.

My heart thudded against my ribs; the room felt suddenly smaller.

“Ethan… he’s not just our friend,” she began, voice trembling like a leaf.

“What do you mean?” I asked, the corsage warm against my wrist.

She swallowed, then said, “He was adopted after the accident.”

My mind raced back to the news flash years ago—my dad’s car spun out, the night I was ten.

“Your father… he…” I whispered, halfway to choking.

Mom nodded, tears spilling onto her sleeve.

“He died trying to save a child. The child was Ethan.”
