Claire Confronts Evan

“Evan, answer me!” I shouted, the pine needles crunching under my boots as I burst through the warped door of his cabin.

He stood by a rusted heater, his hands trembling around a chipped mug.

“You know why I’m here,” I said, voice shaking, “my son is missing because of you.”

He swallowed, eyes darting to the window where dusk painted the forest in bruised purple.

“I took Noah to keep him safe,” he whispered, the words cracking like dry twigs. “You and I were spiraling into a custody war that would have torn him apart.”

“Safe? You vanished him into thin air.”

He turned, the cabin’s dim light catching the scar on his knuckle.

“We’re staying with my sister, Lina, in a remote town. No one will find us there.”

I felt the cold bite of his breath on the pine-scented air.

“Your sister’s house is a lie,” I snapped, “I saw the dump, I saw his clothes.”

He stared at the floor, the old wooden planks groaning under the weight of his secret.

“Claire, I’m trying to protect him from a judge who wants to take him away. I thought—”

My heart hammered against my ribs; the cabin smelled of damp wood and old regrets.

“Protect? You’ve locked him in a nightmare.”

He lifted a worn photograph from his pocket, the edges frayed like the rope tying us to this moment.

Evan Shows the Photo

He held the picture up, the sunlight catching the glossy surface.

“Look—Noah playing, happy as ever.”

The boy’s face lit up, his hands gripping a bright red ball.

But the background was wrong.

Behind the backyard fence, a dilapidated house loomed, its windows boarded, the porch sagging under the weight of neglect.

“That isn’t Lina’s place,” I breathed, the scent of pine giving way to the sour tang of gasoline.

“It’s—” Evan’s voice broke, “It’s the property of… you know who.”

My stomach churned; the house was the one the police had marked as a drug dealer’s hideout weeks ago.

“You’re using a criminal’s lair to hide my son?” I hissed, fists clenching around the photograph.

He tried to answer, but the cabin’s old landline crackled, then fell silent—no dial tone, just a dead hum.

“The line’s cut,” I whispered, the words echoing off the cabin walls.

A sudden shiver ran through the room as a shape slipped from the shadows, emerging like a phantom.

She stepped into the weak lamplight, her eyes cold and familiar.

“Maya,” she said, voice low, “I helped Evan hide Noah.”

The Trail Leads North

Detective Ramos crouched by the dumpster, his flashlight catching the dark imprint of a tire.

“This tread matches a 2021 Dodge Ram,” he whispered, voice tinny over the radio.

I felt my stomach lurch as he lifted the muddy imprint, holding it up like a relic.

“Your husband’s truck,” he said, eyes narrowing. “He drove this here.”

My mind raced—Evan had vanished with Noah, now his footprint stared back at me.

Ramos dropped a photo of the tire onto the cracked concrete, the grain of rubber stark against the grime.
