I Arrived at My Ex’s Christmas Dinner With Four Boys Who Proved Him Wrong

I Arrived at My Ex’s Christmas Dinner With Four Boys Who Proved Him Wrong Save

Claire’s Kitchen, Three Weeks Earlier

I stared at Adrian’s polite invitation on my laptop screen, the words “Since we’ve both moved on, I thought it might be good to leave the past behind” ringing with bitter irony.

My phone buzzed, flashing Mara on the caller ID. My heart dropped the moment I heard her strained voice.

“Claire, you need to listen. Vanessa—she’s planning to spill something at the dinner. It could ruin your custody case.”

I swallowed, feeling the cold edge of dread. “What does she know?”

“She worked at the Fertility Center. She’s got records, Claire. She’ll expose the ‘miracle’ you claim.”

“The quadruplets,” I whispered, the memory of hospital paperwork flashing in my mind.

“Yes. And the Vale family’s name is tied to it. You have to stop her.”

She hung up, leaving a silence louder than any argument.

I grabbed my coat and drove to the roadside diner where Mara waited, a nervous tremor in her hands.

“Mara, what are you really saying?” I asked, sliding into the vinyl booth.

She leaned forward, eyes darting. “Vanessa was a lab tech at the clinic that birthed your boys. She knows about the experimental embryos. She’s about to sell the story.”

The clatter of silverware seemed to punctuate her confession. “Why tell me now?”

“Because the invitation is a trap. He wants you there alone, to watch his perfect life crumble when the truth arrives.”

I felt the weight of those four tiny lives in my lap, each a living refutation of Adrian’s lies.

“We’ll get them the proof,” I promised, the resolve hardening in my chest.

The Night at the Clinic

A cold wind whistled through the parking lot as Malik and I slipped through the side entrance of the Fertility Center. He handed me a badge—his private‑investigator credentials—while the night guard muttered into his radio.

“You’ve got five minutes,” Malik whispered, his breath forming a mist.

Inside, the hallway smelled of antiseptic and stale coffee. We moved like shadows, avoiding the blinking security cameras.

“The records room is down this way,” I said, pointing to a door marked “Archives.”

Malik pried the lock with a slim jim, the metal clicking open. The room was a cavern of filing cabinets, each drawer humming with the quiet rustle of paper.

My fingers trembled as I pulled a thick folder labeled “Vale Family – Confidential.” Inside were printed emails, consent forms, and a sealed envelope marked “Experimental Embryo Program – Elite Clients.”

The USB light blinked, copying the encrypted file onto the drive. My pulse raced as the file name appeared: Project Aurora – Subject: Vale_Quadruplets.

Suddenly, a security guard burst through the doorway, his flashlight slicing the darkness.

“Hey! Stop right there!” he shouted.

Malik lunged, a scuffle ensuing, and a crash echoed as a metal cart tipped, spilling files across the floor.

In the chaos, I clutched the USB, feeling the weight of proof in my palm.

“We have to get out,” Malik hissed, his head slumped, unconscious.

We vaulted the door just as a distant siren wailed, the night swelling with tension.

Back at the Vale estate, Adrian’s smile faded at the sight of our boys, their birthmarks identical, but the real shock was yet to come.
