I Showed Up at My Firefighter Husband’s Station for His Birthday, But His Captain’s Question Left Me Speechless

I Showed Up at My Firefighter Husband’s Station for His Birthday, But His Captain’s Question Left Me Speechless Save

Surprise Turns Sour

The bay doors swung open and the scent of diesel mingled with my frosting‑sweet breath. I clutched the chocolate cake like a lifeline, the twelve balloons bobbing against my shoulders.

“Is Tyler around?” I called, voice wobbling as the red and yellow ribbons brushed my cheek.

The crew’s eyes flicked to me, then darted away, a silent chorus of uneasy glances. The usual chatter died in an instant.

Captain Reyes stepped out of his office, his face drained of the familiar grin that usually greeted me. He stared at the cake, at the balloons, then back at me, as if weighing a sudden, heavy truth.

“Amanda,” he said, voice low, “what are you doing here?”

I swallowed, feeling the weight of the cake shift in my arms.

“I came to surprise Tyler. Is he out on a call?” I asked, trying to sound casual.

He hesitated, eyes flicking to the silent firefighters lined against the wall.

“He’s not here,” Reyes finally said, each word a small crack in the calm.

A cold draft brushed my spine. The station felt suddenly unfamiliar, the hum of the trucks now a hollow echo.

Truth in the Shadows

Reyes rubbed the bridge of his nose, the lines on his forehead deepening.

“Tyler was taken into custody earlier today,” he said, each syllable dropping like a weight onto the concrete floor.

The younger firefighter, a rookie with nervous eyes, shifted his boots and glanced at the doorway.

“He… he was involved in an incident,” the rookie whispered, voice barely above the hiss of the station’s ventilation.

My mind raced, the cake now feeling absurdly heavy.

“What incident?” I demanded, heart pounding against my ribs.

Reyes met my gaze, his jaw set.

“A fire that killed a child.” The words hung in the air, sharp and unforgiving.

The rookie swallowed, eyes darting to the floorboards.

“The evidence… it points to Tyler,” he said, his tone trembling, “but we’re still piecing it together.”

A surge of disbelief crashed over me, mixing with a rising dread.

Reyes leaned in, his voice a low, careful murmur.

“You don’t know yet?”

Alarm Bells and Silent Goodbyes

The shrill wail tore through the station like a knife.

“All units, fire at 12‑West,” crackled over the intercom.

Every head snapped up; the same frantic motions began again, the same clatter of boots and gear.

Captain Reyes barked, “Amanda, stay here. No need for you in the line of fire.”

I clutched the cake tighter, the red balloons brushing my cheek, feeling absurdly out of place.
