Jordan’s Outburst

“Explain yourself, Jordan,” I hissed, pulling him away from the murmuring crowd.

His eyes flickered to the scattered messages on the table, then hardened.

“Mia, I’ve been… distant,” he said, voice raw. “I never saw how much I was missing.”

I felt the sting of his words, each one a thin blade.

“You think a photo and a few notes can fix twenty‑four years?” I asked, my throat tight.

He swallowed, eyes darting to the box we’d just opened.

“I didn’t realize… that you were counting every birthday, every game, every bedtime story I skipped,” he admitted, a tremor in his tone.

“You think I didn’t notice?” I snapped, the party’s chatter fading into a distant hum.

He reached for the envelope tucked beneath his jacket, fingers trembling.

“I’m sorry, Mia. I’m sorry for the silence, for the emptiness you’ve been filling,” he whispered.

His gaze lingered on the photograph of us, young and hopeful, before snapping back to me.

“What now?” I demanded, my heart pounding against my ribs.

He glanced toward the pool, where Ethan and the guests lingered, then back to me, his jaw set.

“I need to think.” He turned, the envelope clenched like a lifeline.

Confronting Ethan

The kitchen smelled of spilled soda and fresh cut grass as I chased Ethan away from the pool.

“Why, Ethan? Why the fake boyfriend?” I asked, voice shaking.

He leaned against the counter, eyes flickering with a mix of defiance and guilt.

“I wanted Dad to see what he’s been missing,” he said, fingers twisting the edge of a napkin.

“You hired a stranger to teach him a lesson?” I pressed, the words spilling out.

He nodded, his shoulders slumping.

“I’ve been keeping a journal,” he confessed, pulling a battered notebook from his backpack. “Every time he skipped a game, every birthday cake I ate alone, every night Mom stayed up alone.”

He flipped it open, pages filled with cramped handwriting, dates, and tiny drawings of a soccer ball, a broken cake, a lone child.

“I thought if he saw the weight of his absence, he’d finally understand,” he whispered, eyes welling.

“And you thought a fake boyfriend would… what? Shock him into a change?” I asked, my voice softening.

He swallowed, a tear escaping down his cheek.

“I didn’t want to be the one to tell him. I wanted the truth to hit him hard enough that he could’t ignore it.”

“You’ve been carrying this alone?” I asked, the sting of betrayal mixing with a mother’s love.

He nodded, his hand trembling over the notebook’s last entry: “Dad left again.”

Suddenly, the front door burst open. Jordan stormed out of the party, guests frozen in shock, his face a mask of fury.

He clutched a mysterious envelope, the paper crinkling as he marched toward the driveway, heading straight for his office.

Jordan Storms Out

Jordan shoved his chair back, the cheap plastic clattering against the tile.

“I need air,” he muttered, voice barely audible over the party’s laughter.

He fled into the night, the sudden chill of the porch wind biting his cheeks.

Every step to his car felt heavier, as if the guilt were a weight strapped to his shoulders.

Driving home, the streetlights flickered like the doubts gnawing at his mind.

He pulled into the parking lot of his downtown office, the glass doors reflecting a man he barely recognized.

Inside, the fluorescent hum greeted him, and his assistant’s startled gasp faded as he slammed the door shut.
