Adrian’s Kitchen Confrontation

Vanessa slipped into the kitchen like a guest at a dinner I never invited.

Her smile was rehearsed, the kind you see on magazine covers, and she carried a plate of scrambled eggs as if offering peace.

“Good morning, Claire,” she said, eyes flicking to the floor where I stood, feeling the cool tiles under my shoes.

I swallowed the sting of my own voice.

“Who taught you to sleep like this?” I asked, the question from three nights ago still raw.

Adrian’s jaw tightened, his hands hovering over the coffee maker, then he turned, cigarette glowing in the dim light.

“It’s Vanessa,” he said, the word falling like a stone.

She laughed, a light, nervous sound that made my skin prickle.

“I’m just here for lunch,” she whispered, placing the plate on the counter.

I felt the room tilt.

“Choose,” I said, the word a blade. “You can’t keep us both in the dark.”

His shoulders sagged, the cigarette dropping to the ashtray with a soft clink.

“I’ll end it,” he promised, eyes darting to the window, to the world outside, to a future I couldn’t see.

For a heartbeat he stared at the floorboards, then at me, and his voice cracked.

“I… I need to think,” he muttered, the hesitation louder than any confession.

Vanessa’s smile faded, replaced by a thin line of uncertainty.

“We’ll talk later,” Adrian added, turning back to the stove, as if the sizzle could erase the tension.

I stood there, the scent of burnt coffee mixing with the metallic taste of betrayal.

His words felt cheap, a promise made to fill the void of three empty years.

When he finally left the kitchen, the door closing behind him sounded like a final verdict.

Hiring a Private Eye

The next morning, I called a name that had once meant “trust” in a different life.

“I need someone to follow Vanessa,” I told the voice on the other end, trying to keep the tremor out of my tone.

He said his name was Mark, a private investigator who’d seen enough affairs to know the scent of lies.

“I’ll start tonight,” he promised, the click of the line hanging in the air.

That evening, I watched from the hallway as Mark slipped his camera into the shadows, his silhouette merging with the darkened stairwell.

Minutes later, my phone buzzed.

A single photo appeared: Adrian, his shirt unbuttoned just enough to reveal a sliver of skin, leaning in to kiss Vanessa on the lips.

The image was crisp, the moment caught in the middle of a whispered laugh, the staircase’s gray concrete blurring behind them.

My heart hammered against my ribs, a frantic drumbeat that matched the flash of the camera.

“What the hell?” I whispered, feeling the room spin.

Mark’s next message was brief: “Got more. Meet me tomorrow.”

But I didn’t need more.

I opened my email, attached the incriminating picture, and typed a simple line to Vanessa.

“You’ll want to see this.”

Then I clicked send, the digital transmission racing across the internet like a bullet.

In the seconds that followed, my phone lit up with a flood of notifications.
