I watched My Husband Choose His Mistress Over Me While I Planned to End His Deceitful Life

I watched My Husband Choose His Mistress Over Me While I Planned to End His Deceitful Life Save

His Arms Around My Waist

After three years abroad, Adrian slipped back into our bedroom like a stranger who had learned a new dance.

He wrapped his arms around my waist from behind, his weight steady, his breath warm against my shoulder.

It was a habit I had never known.

“Who taught you to sleep like that?” I asked, voice barely above the hum of the ceiling fan.

His arm tightened for a split second, then slipped away.

He rose, bare feet padding to the balcony, lit a cigarette, and stared at the city lights.

“If you pretend you don’t know anything, you can keep being my wife,” he said, the smoke curling around his chin.

My heart hammered; the words felt like a threat and a promise rolled into one.

“Then choose,” I whispered, the syllables catching in my throat.

“Her or me.” His eyes flickered, a flash of guilt, then hardened.

“Give me some time. I’ll end things with her.” He sat beside me, the mattress creaking under his weight.

I knew the lie before his mouth formed the words.

“Who is she?” I asked, the question a knife edge.

He swallowed, then mentioned a name like a warning.

“Madeline,” he said, “isn't like the others.”

The air grew cold, the scent of tobacco mingling with the metallic taste of betrayal.

“If you don’t make a scene, she’ll never have any reason to bother you,” he added, his voice flat.

My mind raced, searching for the shape of the woman he kept hidden.

“Then why the hugs?” I pressed, feeling the fabric of his shirt brush my skin.

He glanced at the window, eyes distant, as if measuring how far he could push.

“Because I’m tired of pretending,” he murmured, and the room seemed to shrink around us.

Unpacking the Truth

Later that night, after he retreated to the guest room, I stood in the dim hallway, the hallway light flickering.

His suitcase lay open on the floor, a gaping mouth waiting to be fed secrets.

I lifted the lid and pulled out a bottle of body wash with foreign script, the letters curling like an exotic promise.

The scent was sharp, a mix of citrus and something I couldn’t place—perhaps the ocean.

Next, a photo fell from a pocket: a smiling woman on a Brazilian beach, Adrian’s arm draped around her waist, the sun blazing behind them.

Her name tag on the back read “Madeline.” My breath hitched.

I flipped the suitcase again, finding a crinkled receipt: “Renovation – 125,000 BRL – Paid by Adrian Carvalho.”

The address matched a house I’d seen in a travel brochure of São Paulo.

My fingers trembled as I stared at the numbers, at the proof of a life built behind my back.

I slipped the items into a folder, heart pounding, a storm gathering behind my eyes.

Silence settled, broken only by the distant hum of the refrigerator.

At two in the morning, the house was dark, the only light a thin sliver from the streetlamp filtering through the curtains.

Suddenly, the soft click of the bedroom door startled me.

Adrian entered, his phone pressed to his ear, a grin tugging at his lips.
