Visitation: The Gray Folder

“Evelyn?” Rebecca’s voice cut through the clamor of clanking doors and metal chairs.

I turned, my eyes meeting the sharp, composed stare of my appellate attorney. The prison visitation room smelled of disinfectant and stale coffee, the gray walls humming with muted conversations.

She slipped a thin gray folder across the table, the paper weight surprising for its size.

“Take a look. This is what we’ve been waiting for,” Rebecca whispered, glancing over her shoulder as a guard shuffled past.

I felt the folder’s edges, the subtle ridges of printed numbers hidden beneath a thin layer of plastic.

“What’s inside?” I asked, my voice hoarse from months of stale air.

“Newly uncovered financial records—transactions you’ve never seen before. And a recorded confession from a senior accountant who’s finally broken.”

She pressed a small USB drive into my palm, the cold metal tingling against my skin.

“He talked about the shell corporation, about money moving behind closed doors. He named names.”

I opened the folder, the first page a spreadsheet of transfers, dates, and a series of cryptic account numbers.

My heart hammered. “Marcus…” I began, but the words caught in my throat.

Rebecca leaned in, her eyes fierce. “We have proof, Evelyn. Proof that can turn this entire case on its head.”

For a moment, the walls seemed to recede, the world narrowing to the thin stack of paper and the whisper of a future that might finally come.

Revelations and Lockdown

The guard’s badge clinked as he approached, his face set in a grim line.

“We need to see the folder,” he demanded, his voice flat.

Rebecca slid the folder across to him, her fingers lingering on the edge.

“Look at this, Evelyn,” Rebecca said, pointing to a column of numbers. “Marcus funneled company money into a shell corporation tied directly to Olivia.”

My breath caught. “The shell that owns half of Carter Development?”

“Exactly. And the accountant’s confession ties the transfers to a series of false consulting contracts—contracts signed in Marcus’s name but never executed.”

“They used the subsidiary to launder our own profits,” Rebecca added, her voice low.

I traced the numbers with my thumb, each digit a dagger. “If this gets out… he loses everything.”

“And you regain yours,” she replied, a faint smile breaking through the tension.

Before I could ask how the evidence would reach the press, the door slammed open with a deafening crash.

A uniformed guard burst in, eyes darting, voice trembling. “All personnel, lockdown! Security breach—immediate lockdown! No one leaves the visitation area!”

His words hung heavy in the air as other guards swarmed the hallway, their boots echoing like distant thunder.

Rebecca’s hand tightened around the folder, the paper rustling in the sudden rush of movement.

“We’re trapped,” she whispered, the urgency in her voice matching the pounding of my heart.

The high‑alert sirens began to wail, the facility’s lights flickering as the lockdown sealed us inside.

In that cramped, fluorescent‑lit room, the gray folder lay open between us, the evidence stark and undeniable, while the world outside shut down, leaving only the echo of the guard’s final command: “Lockdown now!”

Section 3 – Locked Down and Unlocked Secrets

“Stay quiet,” I whispered to Rebecca as the guard slammed the cell door shut.

The hallway outside echoed with boots and the clatter of metal doors sealing.

Rebecca slipped a thin black pen into my palm, its nib barely visible.

“Copy what you can. We don’t have much time,” she hissed.
