I Never Imagined a Six‑Month Love Would Haunt My Life With a Will and a Deadly Secret

I Never Imagined a Six‑Month Love Would Haunt My Life With a Will and a Deadly Secret Save

Arriving at the House

I pulled up the driveway of a modest, pale‑brick house, the kind that hides secrets behind well‑kept hedges.

The front door opened before I could even ring. Robert, the attorney, stood in the entryway, his suit crisp despite the summer heat.

“Melanie?” he asked, his voice flat but not unkind.

I nodded, clutching my phone as if it were a lifeline.

“I’m sorry you had to come under these circumstances,” he said, sliding a thick envelope across the polished table.

“Elliot left a letter for you,” he continued. “He specifically instructed that it remains sealed until you are here in person.”

I felt the paper’s weight, a tangible reminder that I was now part of something I never imagined.

“There’s a condition,” Robert added, eyes flicking to the hallway. “If you refuse to be present, his family’s share of the estate is forfeited.”

I swallowed. “So you need me to stay… just to… read a letter?”

He gave a thin smile. “Exactly. It’s the only way the will can be executed.”

The house smelled faintly of lavender and something metallic, like a lab coat left in a drawer.

“Will there be anyone else?” I asked, already picturing a courtroom.

“His sister, Jenna, will be here. She’s expecting you.”

My heart thudded, a mix of curiosity and dread, as I stepped into the foyer, the envelope heavy in my palm.

Confrontation in the Living Room

The living room was dim, the late‑afternoon light slipping through half‑closed blinds.

Jenna stood by the fireplace, arms crossed, her expression a sharp blade.

“You finally showed up,” she snapped, eyes flicking to the envelope. “Read it. We’ve been waiting.”

I lifted the seal, my fingers trembling. “I don’t even know what’s in there.”

Before I could speak, Robert pushed open the back door, a gust of wind rattling the curtains.

“There’s a power outage in the whole block,” he announced, frowning at the darkening sockets.

The lights flickered, then sputtered out, plunging the room into black.

My phone buzzed against my thigh. I fumbled for it, heart racing.

The screen lit up with a frantic caller ID: Mom.

“Melanie? It’s the hospital—” the voice cracked, “your mother… she’s in intensive care. You need to come now.”

Silence settled over the house, the heavy envelope still in my hands, the darkness pressing in.

Between the unknown letter and my mother’s emergency, I felt the world split in two, each demanding my immediate attention.

Section 3 – The Letter Unfolds

When the lights steadied, a low hum filled the kitchen and I could hear the wind rattling the old windows.

I slipped the wax‑sealed envelope from Robert’s outstretched palm, feeling the paper tremble in my fingertips.
