I Overheard My Son’s Husband Plotting With My Long‑Lost Father and Had to Call the Police

I Overheard My Son’s Husband Plotting With My Long‑Lost Father and Had to Call the Police Save

Back From the Reception

I staggered through the front door, the smell of spilled champagne still clinging to the hallway carpet.

Linda was already in the kitchen, a mug of tea steaming in her hand, her eyes flicking up as I slammed the door.

"You look like you've seen a ghost." she said, setting the mug down.

I sank onto the nearest chair, my breath shallow.

"I heard Preston on the phone in the restroom," I whispered, the words tasting like ash.

She frowned, the lines on her face deepening.

"What did he say?" she asked, her voice barely louder than a hush.

My heart hammered as I recalled the name that slipped from his lips.

"Walter." The syllable echoed in my head, a name I hadn't spoken in twenty years.

Linda reached out, her fingers brushing my forearm.

"Mara, that was your son's father, wasn't it?"

I shook my head, tears prickling.

"I thought he died. I thought I was finally free of that nightmare."

She leaned closer, eyes sharp.

"And Preston? He seemed… careful, evasive. Like he was hiding something."

I swallowed, the image of his eyes—cold, calculating—flashing behind me.

"He answered that call in five words. Five words that sounded like a transaction."

Linda sighed, the weight of the moment settling between us.

"We need to find out what that call was about."

I nodded, the resolve hardening like steel.

The Phone Hunt

Later, after Julian had gone to bed, I slipped into the living room where Preston's phone lay on the coffee table, its screen still dark.

My fingers trembled as I swiped to the call log.

There, between the wedding pictures and a missed call from my sister, was an entry marked simply "W".

I tapped it, and a string of encrypted messages burst onto the screen, each a jumble of symbols and numbers.

One line caught my eye: "Meet at the warehouse. 22:15. Envelope."

My pulse raced. I scrolled back, searching for any clue about who "W" might be.

Another message read, "The family will understand. Trust the plan."

My mind spun—who was this hidden contact? And why the secrecy?

I slipped the phone into the bottom drawer of the kitchen cabinet, daring the darkness to conceal my curiosity.

Just as I closed the drawer, the kitchen light flickered on.

Julian stood in the doorway, his eyes narrowing as he saw the slightly ajar drawer.

"Mom?" he asked, a hint of suspicion in his voice.
