I Walked Into the Hospital and Realized the Secrets Behind Our Divorce Were Far More Tragic Than I Imagined

I Walked Into the Hospital and Realized the Secrets Behind Our Divorce Were Far More Tragic Than I Imagined Save

She Stares at Me From the Corridor

“Ethan?” she says, and my breath catches on the single syllable.

The hospital lights hum, casting a sterile glow on the linoleum floor. I can see the tremor in her hands, the way the IV line disappears under the tape.

My mind scrambles for an excuse, a joke, a reason to stay.

“What… what’s happening?” I ask, voice barely above a whisper.

Sophie looks away, lips parting to answer, then a nurse steps forward, clipboard in hand.

“Mr. Walker?” she says, eyes flicking to the badge on my coat. “We’ve been trying to reach you.”

She hands me a thin sheet of paper, the words “Critical Medical Alert” stamped in red across the top.

My heart hammers. “Is she… okay?” I manage, feeling the floor tilt beneath me.

“She’s stable for now, but we’ve flagged her for immediate observation,” the nurse replies, voice clinical yet tight.

Behind her, a figure emerges from the doorway—tall, head covered by a surgical mask, eyes hidden behind dark glasses.

“Dr. Patel,” the nurse murmurs, nodding toward him.

Patel steps closer, his presence magnetic, his lips forming a thin line.

“Mr. Walker, thank you for coming,” he says, voice low. “There’s more you need to know about Sophie’s condition.”

He glances at the IV pole, then back at me, as if weighing how much to reveal.

My mind races, the divorce, the emptiness, the sudden rush of old guilt and new fear.

“What do you mean?” I ask, the word sounding brittle.

Patel’s eyes flick to a chart on the wall, then back, his gaze steady.

“We’ve identified a rare autoimmune response. It’s… unusual, and we’re still investigating.”

Patel’s Revelation and the Conflict Within

“A rare autoimmune disorder?” Sophie’s voice trembles, barely audible over the beeping monitors.

Patel nods, turning a page on the clipboard. “It aligns with the protocol of an experimental trial that began three weeks ago.”

My stomach drops. “What trial?” I demand, the words spilling out faster than I can think.

Patel’s fingers tap the edge of the paper. “The trial was a collaboration between Mercy Lake and a biotech firm called HelixGen.”

HelixGen. The name hits me like a cold slap.

My company, Whitaker Solutions, partnered with HelixGen on a joint venture last year—an alliance I helped negotiate.

“So you’re saying…” I start, the absurdity of the connection swirling.

Patel’s gaze sharpens. “Sophie volunteered for the trial under the premise of a novel therapeutic. The side effects were not fully disclosed.”

A wave of nausea rolls through me. “My company… we funded this?”

“Whitaker’s involvement was financial, not clinical,” Patel says, but his tone suggests otherwise.

I feel the weight of betrayal settle on my shoulders, the divorce suddenly a backdrop to something far larger.

“Who else knows about this?” I ask, desperation edging my voice.

Patel hesitates, then leans in, lowering his voice to a whisper.

“Maya Torres, senior researcher at HelixGen, has been handling the data. She’s been… circumspect.”

My mind flicks to the old office, the late nights with Maya, the shared coffee, the suppressed doubts.

“Maya?” I echo, the name tasting like rust.

Patel hands me a sealed envelope, the paper crisp, the seal unbroken.

“She asked me to give this to you,” he says, eyes fixed on my reaction.
