I discovered the secret in my mother’s boyfriend

I discovered the secret in my mother’s boyfriend Save

Evening Routine at the Kitchen Table

June set down the pot of tea, its steam curling around the copper kettle like a sigh.

Harlan stepped in, his shoes whispering on the linoleum, briefcase thudding against his side.

“Hey, love,” June said, planting a quick kiss on his cheek, the scent of gardenias trailing her lips.

He smiled, a flash of teeth, and lifted the case as if it were a shield.

“You’re late again,” I muttered, watching the clock’s hands shuffle toward 7:30.

He glanced at his watch, the same habit that had become a metronome for our evenings.

“Sorry, sweetheart, I’ve got to run,” he said, voice low, the briefcase snapping shut.

June’s smile flickered, then steadied as he brushed past the doorway.

From the hallway, Nadia lingered, arms crossed, eyes tracking his retreat.

She swallowed, a knot tightening in her throat, but said nothing.

“Don’t worry, Mom,” I whispered, trying to sound reassuring, though the ticking watch echoed louder than the conversation.

He vanished into the twilight, the briefcase a dark silhouette against the porch light.

Nadia’s Trail Through the Night

When the front door clicked shut, Nadia slipped out, the night air cold against her skin.

She kept a safe distance, her sneakers muffling the gravel as she followed Harlan down the sidewalk.

The streetlamp flickered, casting long shadows that seemed to stretch toward the southward turn.

Harlan’s shoulders hunched, his briefcase a weight that pulled him forward.

“Why the south?” Nadia muttered under her breath, heart thudding in her ears.

He disappeared around the corner, the outline of a warehouse looming ahead.

She ducked behind a stack of rusted metal crates, breath shallow, eyes narrowed.

The garage door yawned open, a dim orange glow spilling onto the concrete.

A black van idled, its paint dulled by years of grime, engine humming low.

Harlan slipped into the van, the briefcase sliding onto the passenger seat.

He closed the door with a soft thump, the sound swallowed by the night.

Suddenly, a muffled scream rose from within the van, thin and desperate.

The doors shut, sealing the sound away, leaving Nadia’s pulse racing in the silent darkness.

Morning Confrontation

“June, can we talk about Harlan’s routes?” I asked, watching the steam curl from my coffee.

She glanced up, smile already in place, as if my question were a stray leaf.

“Honey, he’s a consultant. He works late for a firm downtown. That’s all.”

I felt the weight of the briefcase lingering in my mind like a phantom.
