I Spent My Life Hating My Father Until His Last Week Changed Everything Forever

I Spent My Life Hating My Father Until His Last Week Changed Everything Forever Save

Day 7 – The Hidden Safe

I slipped into my father's study after he fell asleep, the heavy curtains muffling the night wind.

The desk was a monolith of mahogany, its drawers polished to a shine that reflected my own tired face.

A faint click echoed from behind a false back panel. My hand hovered, heart thudding against my ribs.

Should I? What if it's a trap? I thought, feeling the weight of years of abandonment settle like dust on my shoulders.

Vanessa lingered in the doorway, her eyes narrowed, as if she could read the tremor in my fingers.

"Curiosity killed the cat," she whispered, voice low, but her gaze never left the safe.

I swallowed, feeling the cool metal of the safe's handle. The lock was old, rusted, but still stubbornly resistant.

With a grunt, I turned the dial, the numbers clacking like an impatient metronome.

The lid sighed open, revealing a stack of legal documents, a sealed envelope addressed in elegant script to me, and a small brass key that glinted like a promise.

I lifted the envelope, the paper trembling in my palm, while Vanessa's stare hardened, as if measuring my resolve.

Cliffhanger – The Blood‑Stained Photograph

I slipped the envelope from the safe, feeling the seal break with a soft rustle.

Inside, the letter began with a trembling "My dear Nadia," but before I could read further, a dark smear slid from the paper’s edge.

It was a photograph, soaked in a deep, rust‑colored stain that looked eerily like dried blood.

The image showed my mother, alive, smiling beneath a sunlit canopy, her arm around a man who was my father's mirror image—same jaw, same eyes.

My breath caught; the scene should not have existed. My mother had died years before I ever knew her.

My fingers traced the back of the photo, and there, in a shaky hand, the words crawled across the glossy surface:

"You will never leave us"

The handwriting was unmistakably his—Desmond’s.

Vanessa stepped forward, gun suddenly in her hand, her voice a low, urgent hiss:

"What the hell is this?"

The room seemed to close in, the storm outside pounding the windows as the weight of the secret settled between us.

I stared at the blood‑stained photograph, the inked threat burning itself into my mind.

Day 8 – The Photo

When the blood‑stained photograph slipped from the safe, my pulse hammered against my throat.

“Explain this,” I whispered, holding the picture up to the trembling light.

Desmond’s eyes flickered, then glazed over. “I… I thought you’d never see it.”

He swallowed, his hands shaking as if he’d just touched fire.

“Why would you sell our empire?” I asked, the words raw. “What did you trade us for?”

His mouth trembled, a sigh escaping before he could form a sentence.

“I sold my share to the Syndicate,” he confessed, voice cracking. “They promised protection—for you.”

My mind raced. “Protection? By what? By what did you bind us?”

He looked away, the shadows in the study swallowing his stare.
