I’m the Disowned Daughter Who Saved Soldiers and Uncovered My Grandfather’s Dangerous Secret

I’m the Disowned Daughter Who Saved Soldiers and Uncovered My Grandfather’s Dangerous Secret Save

Funeral of a Legend

The grand hall of the Heritage Military Club brimmed with polished brass and solemn uniforms. I stood beside my grandfather’s casket, the scent of incense mingling with the faint perfume of expensive cologne.

General Michael Carter entered, his steps echoing on the marble floor. My father, Richard Hayes, leaned into the microphone, his voice dripping sarcasm.

“Listen up, everyone—my daughter, the ‘Band‑Aid Princess,’ finally made it to a funeral,” he snarled, eyes flicking over my colonel’s insignia. “Do you still have enough gauze for the troops, Emily?”

Jason, glass of whiskey in hand, chuckled, “I didn’t realize field doctors got invited to places like this.” The crowd murmured, some stifling laughter, others shifting uncomfortably.

I kept my composure, the weight of my uniform grounding me. “They make exceptions for funerals,” I replied, voice steady.

Behind me, the mourners whispered about my grandfather’s legacy. A silver glint caught my eye as General Carter stepped forward, saluting me with practiced precision.

“Colonel Hayes,” he said, his tone respectful, “I have something your grandfather kept for you.” He slipped a small silver pocket watch into my palm, its engraved face bright against my skin.

Beside the watch lay a folded note, its paper crisp, the ink bold.

I tucked the watch into my breast pocket, feeling the cold metal against my heart.

General’s Warning

General Carter’s eyes lingered on me a beat longer, as if measuring the weight of what he was about to say.

“Emily, your grandfather trusted you with more than a timepiece,” he began, voice low enough that only I could hear above the murmurs. “That watch holds a secret—something he feared would fall into the wrong hands.”

He placed the note on the polished table, his fingers hovering before he pressed it into my hand.

The paper felt heavier than its size suggested. I unfolded it, the words stark against the cream background:

Do not let Richard find the blue folder.

A shiver rippled through me. The phrase “blue folder” sparked a memory of my grandfather’s locked study, a place I’d never been allowed to enter.

My father’s chuckle echoed faintly from the other side of the room, a reminder of his scorn. I glanced at Jason, his smile now a thin line, the whiskey glass trembling slightly.

General Carter met my gaze, his expression unreadable. “You’ll know where to look,” he said, turning to salute the crowd once more.

The note’s warning settled in my mind like a ticking bomb. What could be hidden in a blue folder that would make my father desperate enough to hunt it down?

I felt the watch’s steady tick against my chest, each beat a reminder that time was already slipping away.

My thoughts raced, but one thing was clear: I could not let Richard—my own father—discover what lay within that folder.

The hall’s chatter faded, replaced by the thudding of my own heartbeat. The mystery loomed, and I knew the next steps would decide everything.

Emily Returns to the Estate

The night air bit at my cheeks as I slipped through the iron gates of the family estate, the old marble statues glinting like sentinels.
