I Came Home After Birth to Find My Husband Locked Me Out, And I Realized the House Was Always Mine

I Came Home After Birth to Find My Husband Locked Me Out, And I Realized the House Was Always Mine Save

Home Turned Away

Rain drummed on the windshield as I pulled up to the brick house, Lily’s tiny head nestled against my shoulder.

The porch lights glowed like a promise.

My hands trembled, the hospital bag thudding against my side, when I pressed the keypad.

Red.

I tried again, heart pounding louder than the storm.

Red.

A third attempt, a breath held too long, still red.

My stomach clenched. I fished out the old key, the one that had opened the door for years.

It didn’t fit.

The lock had been replaced.

Lily’s soft sigh rose from my chest, a reminder that time was slipping.

I stood on the porch, rain soaking my coat, the house a silent, unwelcoming wall.

My phone buzzed. I swiped it open and dialed his name, the numbers blurring with tears.

Someone Else Is Laughing

“Cole?” I whispered, voice cracking, as the call rang into a background of distant music.

He answered, but his voice was muffled by waves and laughter.

“Hey, Hannah… what’s up?”

I could hear a woman’s laugh, a clink of glasses, a faint roar of surf.

“The door code… it’s not working.” My words fell flat.

There was a pause, then a casual sigh.

“I changed it.”

My throat tightened. “You changed the code while I was in the hospital?”

His mother’s voice cut in, bright as a sunlit tide.

“Is she outside?”

Someone laughed again, the sound echoing like surf foam.
