Walking in the Rain Was My First Lesson in Power, Family Loyalty, and a Deal That Changed Everything

Walking in the Rain Was My First Lesson in Power, Family Loyalty, and a Deal That Changed Everything Save

Rosa’s Window

The SUV hissed as Rosa Valdez lowered the window, the rain clawing at the glass.

“We don’t give rides to strangers,” she said, voice flat as the wet pavement.

Mateo didn’t look up. His thumb flicked across his phone, a blue glow on his face.

“If you truly belong in this family, you can find your own way there,” he muttered, half‑hearted.

Camila tucked the phone into her lap, the camera angled at me, eyes glittering with mischief.

“Look at the city princess,” she whispered, giggling. “A little rain won’t hurt you.”

Rosa’s smile was thin, a razor‑edge.

“A daughter‑in‑law joins this family when she learns respect,” she declared.

My two suitcases sat like silent witnesses on the slick concrete.

“Are you completely sure you want me to walk?” Rosa asked, already knowing the answer.

“Absolutely,” I heard her say, and the word felt heavier than the clouds above.

They revved the engine, tires spitting muddy spray that smeared my boots.

“Alright,” I whispered, clutching the straps of the bags as they drove away.

The Black SUV

I stood under the trembling awning of the terminal, the rain a cold curtain that soaked straight through my coat.

My feet sank into the slick asphalt as I hoisted the suitcases, each step a splash of water and grit.

The map on my phone glowed, the route to the Valdez estate a jagged line through the storm.

Wind howled, rattling the metal shutters and tugging at the edges of my hair.

I took a breath, the scent of wet pine and rust filling my lungs, and set off toward the dark road.

Streetlights flickered, halos in the downpour, casting brief islands of light on the wet shoulder.

Half a mile in, a sudden screech tore through the night, tires screaming on blacktop.

A black SUV lunged, its wheels skidding, a spray of water and mud arcing behind it.

It tipped, metal crumpling like foil, and the world seemed to hold its breath.

Silence fell, broken only by the relentless rain and the distant rumble of thunder.

When the dust settled, the driver lay still, a dark shape against the shattered windshield.

The wreck blocked the only road, its twisted frame a jagged gate in the storm.

I stared, rain slashing my face, the path ahead vanished beneath the wreckage.

Stranded, the cold wind biting my cheeks, I realized the journey had just begun.

A crashed black SUV blocks the only road, leaving Isabel stranded in the storm.

Finding the Barn

The rain hammered the dirt road like impatient fists.

My boots sank into mud with each step, the suitcases dragging behind me, their wheels squeaking against the slick stone.
