I Married a Stranger in a Hospital, and His Last Gift Changed My Life Forever

I Married a Stranger in a Hospital, and His Last Gift Changed My Life Forever Save

Backpack of Secrets

My yellow sweater clung to me like a reminder of the promise I’d made in that sterile room.

The hallway smelled of antiseptic and something faintly sweet, like the tea the night nurses brewed.

Mr. Knox, the lawyer, stood by the front desk, his briefcase heavy, his eyes weighed down with something he didn’t say.

“Camille,” he said, voice low, “Bennett asked me to give you this.”

He placed the green backpack on the polished floor; the canvas was scuffed, the green faded like old money.

I hesitated, fingers trembling, then lifted the strap.

Inside, a stack of letters lay on a thin sheet of paper, edges frayed, ink smudged with time.

Each envelope bore Bennett’s looping hand, dates that marched forward after his death.

Beside them, a brass key glinted, its bow engraved with the number “E‑13.”

“That opens the locker in the abandoned wing,” Knox whispered, “the one they sealed off after the fire.”

A chill ran down my spine, not from the cold, but from the implication.

I slipped the key into my pocket, feeling the weight of stories I hadn't lived.

“Read them when you’re ready,” he added, eyes flicking toward the exit.

I turned, the hallway stretching ahead, the backpack heavy against my side, and stepped toward the wing that had been shuttered for years.

The Locked Wing

The door to the abandoned wing groaned as I pushed it, metal hinges whining against years of dust.

Inside, the air was stale, a mix of mildew and the faint metallic tang of old equipment.

Rows of rusted lockers lined the walls, each one a silent keeper of forgotten patients.

I found locker E‑13, its lock already cracked, as if waiting for me.

Inside lay a stack of yellowed files, folders thick with paper, and a large mural that spanned the far wall.

The mural was a collage of faces—eyes that seemed to stare back, mouths frozen in half‑smiles.

I reached for his file, the leather cover soft from use, and opened it to a page marked with a red ribbon.

Words swam on the page, a confession of experiments, of identities swapped, of a project hidden behind hospital walls.

Suddenly, the fluorescent lights flickered, buzzed, and plunged the wing into darkness.

A cold breath brushed my cheek; the hallway was silent but for my own heartbeat.

Then, faint footsteps echoed behind me, slow and deliberate, growing louder with each step.

I froze, the darkness pressing in, the unknown approaching.

Lights Return, a Stranger Steps Into the Shadows

The bulbs sputtered, then steadied, spilling pale light over the dust‑laden floor.
