Confrontation in the Kitchen

I slammed the kitchen door behind me, the clatter echoing off the tiles.

"Lila, you know why I'm here," I said, voice tight, eyes locked on her.

She turned, hands folded around a steaming mug, her smile brittle.

"What are you talking about, dear?" she asked, as if the question were a joke.

The scent of coffee mingled with the faint smell of her perfume, but my focus was on the tremor in her fingers.

"The women my dad dates— they vanish. One night, then they're gone. I need answers."

She sipped, eyes darting to the window where rain drummed the glass.

"People come and go," she murmured, voice wavering. "Your father has been lonely."

My heart hammered. I caught a glimpse of her knuckles white around the mug.

"Lila, stop. You've seen it. I saw the warning on Maren's phone. Who's watching us?"

She swallowed, a sound like a cracked bottle.

"I— I have no idea," she whispered, but the tremor in her hands deepened, the mug trembling as if a storm were inside.

My mind raced, cataloguing every detail— the way she avoided my gaze, the way the kitchen light flickered just as she spoke.

Suddenly, the lights sputtered, and she flinched, a flash of panic crossing her face.

Before I could press further, the house settled into an uneasy silence, broken only by the soft hiss of rain.

Sam's Midnight Call

The phone buzzed hard against the nightstand. I fumbled for it, half-asleep, and answered.

"Sam? What's wrong?" I asked, the sound of my own breath loud in the quiet.

"It's me," he whispered, panic cracking his voice. "Someone's following me. I saw them at the bus stop."

I sat up, the sheets rustling. "What do they look like?"

"Just a shadow, tall, hoodie. They were there when I turned the corner to the grocery store. I stopped, they kept watching."

My mind flashed back to Aunt Lila, to the trembling hands, to Maren's warning.

"Sam, you need to get home. Lock the doors. Call the police."

He swallowed, silence stretching.

"I think they're watching all of us," he said finally, voice trembling. "It feels like they're... like the same one that took the women."

I felt the floor tilt under me, the weight of a secret pressing down.

"Stay inside. Don't go anywhere alone. I'll be there soon."

He sighed, a sound like a door closing.

"Okay. Please— just be careful," he whispered before the line went dead.

I stared at the dark hallway, heart thudding, then heard it—a sudden, deafening crash outside.

A window shattered, glass spraying across the porch as a shadowy figure lunged through the broken pane.

Revisiting the Café with Maren

We met at Maren’s tiny office, the one plastered with flyers for the boutique she managed.

“I still think it’s a glitch in the app,” she said, tapping a coffee stain on her desk.

I slid the USB we’d pulled from the café’s back‑room server across the table.
