I Thought My Brother’s Shocking Marriage Was About Sacrifice Until I Uncovered the Real Reason

I Thought My Brother’s Shocking Marriage Was About Sacrifice Until I Uncovered the Real Reason Save

The Chaos of Family Dinner

The kitchen was a cacophony of clattering dishes and hushed whispers when I walked in. My mother still stood frozen by the sink, shards of glass at her feet. The air was thick with tension.

My father's face was pale, his fists clenched on the table. "Is the baby yours?" he had asked, his voice shaking. My brother, Alex, met his gaze with a calm resolve. "No," he replied quietly.

The room fell silent. The only sound was my mother's ragged breathing. My father's eyes narrowed, and he called the wedding a mistake. My mother burst into tears, her sobs echoing through the cramped space.

I looked at Alex, trying to understand. He was always the successful one, the one with the promising career and the kind heart. Why would he marry a woman carrying another man's child?

Alex's eyes met mine, and I saw a flash of determination. He seemed to be holding something back, a secret he wasn't ready to share yet.

Maya, his wife, stood quietly by the door, her hand resting protectively on her belly. She was six months pregnant, and it was clear to everyone in the room.

I felt a knot form in my stomach. What was really going on? I needed to understand, and I knew I had to talk to Maya alone.

A Hidden Secret

After the tension died down, I slipped away from the kitchen and made my way to Maya's bedroom. The door was slightly ajar, and I pushed it open gently.

Maya was sitting on the bed, her eyes red from crying. She looked up as I entered, her expression wary. "Hi," I said softly, closing the door behind me.

"What do you want?" she asked, her voice trembling. I took a step closer, trying to sound reassuring. "I just want to understand. Why did Alex marry you?"

Maya's eyes filled with tears. "He said he had to," she whispered. "He said he made a promise."

I noticed something on the nightstand—a photograph of a young woman who looked eerily like Maya. I picked it up, my heart racing. "Who is this?" I asked.

Maya's gaze followed mine. "That was my mother," she said, her voice barely audible. "She looked just like me."

I turned the photo over and found a diary tucked underneath. It was old and worn, the pages yellowed with age. I opened it to a random page, and my eyes widened at what I read. "A promise to a dying man," it said.

Before I could say anything more, the door burst open. My mother stormed in, her face red with anger. "What are you doing in here?" she demanded, her eyes darting between Maya and me.

My brother, Alex, appeared in the doorway behind her. "Mother, please," he said, his voice firm. "I have to honor a vow."

Mama's eyes narrowed. "What vow?" she shouted. Alex's jaw tightened, and he took a step forward. "A promise I made decades ago," he said, his voice resolute.

Just as he spoke, Maya let out a sudden gasp. A bloodied envelope fell from her coat pocket, landing on the floor with a soft thud. My heart stopped. What was in that envelope? What dangerous secret was she hiding?
