A Mother With No Safe Choice
Tessa's heart raced as she dashed into the dining area, her eyes scanning each table for a glimpse of Ivy’s bright pink onesie. She bit her lip, recalling the details of the linen room. “I locked everything,” she whispered to herself, desperation clawing at her throat.
Miranda Sloan stood near the bar, arms crossed, a cruel smirk stretching across her face. “You really think Mr. Whitaker will overlook your negligence?” she taunted. “When he finds out you lost a baby on his watch, you won't just lose your job; you’ll be done in this city.”
Every word felt like ice. Tessa’s hands shook as she pushed through the kitchen doors again, the clattering of pots and pans amplifying her anxiety. “I can't think,” she muttered, panic clouding her mind as she shoved aside the boxes stacked against the wall. “Ivy, please!”
She sprinted back toward the service corridor, dread pooling in her stomach. The door at the end loomed, ajar and forbidding. “I can't just stand here,” she thought. “I need to check!”
Tessa grabbed the brass railing, her knuckles white. Each step down felt heavier than the last, her breath quickening as she reached the bottom. The warm light spilling from Graham Whitaker’s office was a stark contrast to her swirling fears.
When she stepped inside, her breath caught. There was Ivy. Nestled against Graham's chest, her tiny fingers clutched the fabric of his suit. The room fell silent, a surreal peace enveloping them. Graham looked at Tessa, concern etched in his features. “She was safe here,” he said softly, a hint of something deeper in his eyes. “I’ve been watching you struggle.”
Unraveling Chaos
Before Tessa could process his words, the door swung open, and Miranda stormed in. “Graham, give her back that baby!” she demanded, her voice shrill and commanding.
Graham’s expression hardened, protective instincts flooding his demeanor. “No, Miranda. She’s safe with me.” He turned to Tessa, his voice gentle yet firm. “You’ve been doing everything you can, Tessa.”
“You don't understand,” Tessa gasped, barely holding herself together. “They’ll take her away.”
Just as Tessa’s breathing steadied, the door burst open again. There stood Marcus, her ex, with his mother at his side. A wave of dread washed over her. “There you are, Tessa,” he said, a smug smile creeping across his face. “Looks like you’ve really messed up this time.”
“What are you doing here?” Tessa’s voice trembled. Marcus stepped closer, his condescending tone slicing through the air. “You’re unfit to care for Ivy. You think bringing her to work proves you can handle parenting? It’s ridiculous.”
Graham moved to stand between them. “Tessa’s been doing her best,” he said, a fierce protectiveness in his voice. “You don't know her situation.”
But Marcus just laughed, “She needs to be held accountable. I’m ready to take her.”
As the tension crackled in the air, Tessa felt her heart plummet. The reality of losing Ivy settled like a weight on her chest. Just then, the unmistakable sound of sirens echoed outside, causing her breath to hitch. Marcus's smirk deepened as he glanced at the door. Tessa realized, with a chill, that the police were coming, and with them, the threat of losing everything.
