I Had Five Minutes to Save My Daughter’s Dream Night from a Truth I Dreaded to Reveal

I Had Five Minutes to Save My Daughter’s Dream Night from a Truth I Dreaded to Reveal Save

Five Minutes

Iris rushed back into the living room, the glass of water trembling slightly in her hand. Ryan was seated, a tense stillness around him, his eyes fixed on me with a seriousness that made my heart race. What did he know? What was I supposed to say? I could practically hear the weight of his ultimatum hanging in the air, suffocating any chance I had to think clearly.

I glanced at Iris, her face alight with the thrill of the night—the dress, the dancing, the laughter. God, she was so happy. But the joy I saw was underscored by a truth I had buried deep, a secret about her father that was now clawing to the surface. I could feel the ground shifting beneath me, the walls closing in, the urgency of Ryan’s words echoing in my mind: "You have five minutes."

Each tick of the clock felt like a countdown to disaster. What would happen if I didn’t tell her? Would Ryan step in, forcing my hand? My daughter deserved the truth, but could I give it to her? My thoughts spun like autumn leaves caught in a whirlwind. I had prepared for so long to guard this truth, but now it felt like a boulder balancing precariously on the edge of a cliff.

“Mom? You okay?” Iris's voice pulled me from my spiraling thoughts. She stood there, peering at me with those trusting eyes. I forced a smile that didn’t quite reach my heart.

The Pressure Mounts

Taking a deep breath, I felt the air grow heavy. Ryan shifted in his seat, his impatience palpable, like an electric current between us. I knew I had to act fast, but my mouth felt dry, thoughts swirling in a chaotic dance. Iris plopped down beside him, her cheeks flushed with excitement.

“Uh, well…” Ryan hesitated, glancing back at me, his eyes narrowing. “There was something strange at the party. I overheard some kids talking about your dad, Iris.”

In that instant, I felt a chill in my bones. Iris's smile faltered as she registered the weight of his words. “My dad? What do you mean?” Her curiosity ignited, and I sensed the impending storm. I needed to divert her attention, to shield her from the truth that was barreling toward us.

“Iris, some secrets are better left undiscovered,” I interjected, my voice trembling slightly. The last thing I wanted was for her to dig deeper, but her brow furrowed, a hint of determination on her face.

“No! I want to know.” Before I could respond, Iris's phone buzzed loudly, jolting us from the tense moment. She picked it up, her face dropping as she scanned the screen.

As Iris read the shocking message, her expression shifted from confusion to fear, leaving me frozen in dread.
