Confronting Mark
That evening, the kitchen felt too small, the air thick with unspoken words. I leaned against the counter, crossing my arms, watching Mark as he washed the dishes. The clink of plates echoed in the silence. “We need to talk about Tessa,” I finally said, my voice steady yet strained.
Mark turned, his brows furrowed in confusion. “What about her?”
I took a breath, feeling the weight of the truth lift slowly. “She’s been skipping school, and today... I saw her with your father.”
Mark stiffened, the soap slipping from his fingers. “What do you mean?”
“I mean, she’s been visiting him at that old cabin.”
A beat passed before he spoke, a mixture of surprise and something deeper lingering in his eyes. “Why didn’t she tell us?”
“I don’t know,” I replied, my heart racing. “But you need to tell me everything. What’s going on with you and your father?”
He ran a hand through his hair, frustration etched on his face. “I’ve been trying to mend things with him. He wants to be part of Tessa’s life.”
My stomach twisted at his words. “You can’t be serious. After everything he’s done?”
Mark sighed, his gaze dropping to the floor. “He’s changed, Elowen. I believe that.”
“You believe that?” my voice rose, disbelief spilling over. “You’re willing to let him back in?”
Mark looked up, anguish shadowing his features. “It could be a blessing for her. A chance to know her grandfather.”
“Or a curse,” I replied, gripping the counter. “What if he hurts her like he hurt you?”
“I just want to give him a chance to be better,” he said, eyes pleading. “For Tessa.”
I shook my head, every instinct screaming against this newfound connection. “You have no idea what he’s capable of.”
Following Tessa
The next morning, determination coursed through me. I climbed into my car, my heart pounding, ready to follow Tessa again. I had to discover what she was doing with her grandfather. I parked a safe distance from the school and waited, nerves dancing in my stomach.
When the bus pulled away, Tessa stepped off at the familiar stop. She glanced around before heading toward the edge of town, her steps quickening. I trailed behind, the old trees casting long shadows.
She took the dirt path leading to the secluded cabin, and dread washed over me. I parked quietly, stepping out to observe. The cabin loomed, a rundown relic nestled in the trees. A knot of anxiety tightened in my chest as I approached, careful to stay hidden.
I peered through the dirty window, and my heart stopped. Tessa was sitting on the worn wooden floor with William, their heads bent together, sharing laughter. I couldn’t hear their words, but the warmth in her eyes twisted the knife deeper.
After a while, I watched in silence as Tessa stood up, her face bright with excitement. “I’ll come back next week!” she declared, her voice rising with hope.
“I’ll be waiting, Tessa,” William replied, an emotion in his eyes that both frightened and saddened me.
When they finished talking, Tessa pulled out a crumpled piece of paper from her pocket, her eyes wide with eagerness. “I found this letter…” she began, her tone shifting to a serious note. Something in me tensed, a gut feeling that this was no ordinary letter.
“What letter?” I whispered to myself, panic rising. I needed to know more. Tessa looked conflicted, torn between her grandfather’s affection and my skepticism.
“He regrets leaving, Mom,” she said suddenly, her voice strong. “He wants to come back.” My breath caught in my throat, the weight of her words shocking me to my core.
