Letters from the Past
I stared at the box, my heart racing as I finally lifted the lid. Inside were a series of neatly folded letters, each one addressed to me and carefully dated. I picked the first one, dated just after Harper's birth, and unfolded it with trembling hands.
“Dear Love,” the letter began, and I could almost hear Meredith’s voice echoing in my mind. “I’m writing this because I want you to know how much you mean to me. Being a parent is terrifying, and I worry about so many things…”
The words blurred as I read on, my thoughts racing. Meredith’s insecurities about my parenting choices poured onto the pages. I swallowed hard, glancing toward the living room where the children were playing. Harper was attempting to teach Henry how to stack blocks, while Holly and Hazel giggled over some secret joke.
Meredith had been so strong, guiding our family with poise. How could she have had these fears? I fought back tears, desperately wanting to shield her from the sadness I could sense weighing down on me now.
“If anything ever happens to me,” the letter continued, “I need you to promise me you will be the best father you can be. I worry about our family.”
I felt a sharp ache in my chest, a tumult of emotions crashing over me like waves against a fragile shore. How had I not seen her pain? I moved to the next letter, feeling the weight of each word as it seemed to pull me deeper into a storm of grief and guilt.
Unraveling Secrets
The second letter was dated five years later. My fingers trembled again as I read her familiar cursive. “You may not know this, but I’ve been struggling with something serious.”
My stomach knotted. Suddenly, every laugh echoing from the living room felt like a distant memory, overshadowed by a sinking dread. As I read further, Meredith’s confession hit me like a blow. She had been diagnosed with a hereditary illness.
“I didn’t want to burden you with my fears,” the letter explained. “But I needed you to be aware. Our children could be affected.”
A cold sweat trickled down my back. Memories flooded my mind: Meredith brushing off her fatigue, her reassurances that everything was fine. I recalled a cryptic conversation with Sandra about family history and illnesses, and now it all made horrifying sense.
Buried inside the letter was a note that mentioned a meeting with a genetic counselor, and I felt my heart race with urgency. I needed to know what else Meredith had kept hidden, to confront Sandra about what more she might know.
But just as I decided to call her, I heard a loud crash coming from the living room.
