I Spent Ten Years Waiting for My Son, But What I Found Changed Everything I Thought I Knew About Him

Rowan's Shadows
My hands began trembling as I stood in the room filled with cash, each stack whispering secrets I couldn't understand. The silence around me felt oppressive, and just as I tried to think, I heard footsteps approaching.
My heart raced, an instinctive fear gripping me. I froze, twisting around slowly, panic flooding my veins. A tall man appeared at the top of the staircase, his face strained and serious, and in that moment, I realized he was not Rowan.
He took a step closer, his eyes piercing as he scrutinized me. “Who are you?” I managed to croak out, my voice hoarse with confusion and dread.
“Kade,” he said, his voice deep and steady. “Rowan’s business partner.”
My breath caught in my throat. “Where is he?” I demanded, a sense of urgency bubbling to the surface. The anger mingled with my fear, and I could feel my defenses rising. “What has happened to my son?”
Kade’s expression didn’t soften. “He’s in serious trouble,” he replied bluntly, stepping closer. “And you need to understand—this money, it was meant to keep you safe.”
Unraveling Truths
“Safe?” I echoed, confusion clawing at my mind. “Because of what? What do you mean?”
Kade’s silence stretched, heavy with unspoken truths. “Rowan’s involved in things… things that could hurt him. And you.”
The floor beneath me felt like it could collapse. “What are you talking about?” I felt the walls closing in, the reality of his words threatening to shatter everything I thought I knew about my son.
“He’s mixed up in illegal activities overseas.” Kade’s voice was matter-of-fact, yet tinged with urgency. “He’s been trying to protect you, Elara, but it’s only making things worse.”
My heart sank as I fought to reconcile the loving son I knew with this grim reality. “No, that can’t be true. Rowan is—he's not like that.” But even as I spoke, I could see how naive I sounded.
Kade leaned forward, his eyes intent. “I’ve been trying to reach him for weeks. There’s a threat from a rival gang, and it’s escalating.”
“What can I do?” I asked, desperation creeping into my voice. I needed to do something—anything—for my son.
Just as Kade pulled out his phone and handed it to me, a loud crash resonated from outside, making us both jump. “We need to go. Now,” he said, urgency pouring from his every word. My hands shook as I clutched the phone, the reality of being pursued sinking in like a lead weight.
“What was that?” I whispered, feeling the fear rise in my chest like a tidal wave.
