Confrontation
I stood frozen in the kitchen, the glow from Mirelle's phone still flickering in my mind. “Nessa,” I called, my voice trembling as I stepped into the living room. “We need to talk.”
Nessa looked up from her laptop, her fingers paused mid-type. “About what?” She avoided my gaze, her brows knitting together.
I swallowed hard. “About that photo. The one Mirelle showed me.”
“Why are you bringing this up now?” Nessa shot back, her tone sharper than I expected.
“Because it’s important! You need to tell me what’s going on.”
Her posture stiffened, arms crossing defensively. “I’m fine. Can’t you just trust me?”
“Trust you?” I could feel the heat rising in my chest. “After what I just found out? You can’t keep shutting me out!”
“You don’t understand anything!” she screamed, tears pooling in her eyes. “I’m not a child anymore!”
I took a step back, the emotional wall between us thickening. “Then act like it! Face this with me, Nessa!”
“You think I wanted this? I thought I left it behind!” She ran a hand through her hair, frustration evident in her trembling fingers.
“Left what behind?” I pressed, desperate for answers.
“My past,” she whispered, a crack in her voice. “It’s not what you think.”
I felt my heart race, intuition screaming that there were layers to her struggle I had yet to uncover. “Then tell me. Please.”
“It’s complicated, Dad. Just... drop it.”
But I couldn't. My world felt like it was crumbling, and she was the only piece holding it together. “We’re in this together, Nessa. I won’t let you face it alone.”
Seeking Answers
Feeling the weight of our unresolved argument, I left the house, my mind swirling. I needed clarity, a lifeline to pull me back from the edge. The caseworker, Ms. Allen, was my best shot.
The sun hung low in the sky as I entered her office, the familiar scent of antiseptic mixing with the scent of old paper. “I need to talk to you about Nessa,” I began, urgency lacing my words.
Her expression shifted, concern etching across her face. “What’s wrong? Is she okay?”
“She’s not fine. There’s something from her past, and I need to understand.”
Ms. Allen leaned back, crossing her arms. “There were other families interested in adopting her, you know. Families that were disqualified.”
“Disqualified? Why?” I demanded, confusion mingling with fear.
“I can’t go into details,” she said, her voice dropping. “But there were serious concerns.”
“Concerns about what?” My patience wore thin as I leaned forward, searching her eyes for answers.
Just as she opened her mouth, her phone rang, shattering the tense silence.
Ms. Allen’s face went pale. “I... I need to take this,” she muttered, turning away from me.
“No, wait! This is important. Please!”
But she walked out of the room, leaving me alone with my racing heart, the weight of her unfinished words hanging thickly in the air.
My gut churned. What were they hiding about Nessa? Just as I felt the walls closing in, she returned, her expression grave, and I knew the conversation was over.
