I Returned Home to Find My Wife in a Coffin and a Hidden Truth That Changed Everything

I Returned Home to Find My Wife in a Coffin and a Hidden Truth That Changed Everything Save

Confronting My Mother

“What is she holding?” I asked quietly, leaning closer to Emily. My mother’s eyes flashed with panic, but she quickly masked it with a tight smile. I could see through her facade. “Leave her be, Daniel. This isn’t the time.”

“No.” I stood up straight, my heart pounding. “This is the exact time. I need to know what happened.”

Margaret pressed her lips together. “Emily died giving birth, Daniel. You have to accept that.”

“But—”

“No buts!” she snapped, her voice rising. “In your absence, I took care of everything. I held your son as he took his first breath. I mourned your wife.”

“You didn’t mourn Emily. You barely shed a tear,” I said, my voice barely above a whisper. The weight of my rage threatened to suffocate me.

Caleb shifted against the fireplace, glass still in hand. “Maybe she was just trying to keep it together for you, Dan.”

I shot him a glare. “I’m not the one who needs to keep it together right now.”

My mother crossed her arms defensively. “Emily had complications. That’s all there is to it.”

“Complications?” I took a step closer. “What complications? Where's the proof?”

My gaze darted around the room, taking in the carefully arranged flowers, the untouched gifts awaiting my return. They all felt wrong. “She should have had something from the hospital. A bracelet, discharge papers—something!”

“She didn’t need it!” Margaret’s voice cracked. “She was my daughter-in-law. I handled everything! You have no idea what I went through!”

“I don’t believe you,” I said, the words tasting bitter on my tongue. “There’s something you’re not telling me. Something more.”

“You don’t know everything about your family,” Caleb muttered, his tone low and conspiratorial.

I swallowed hard, dread pooling in my gut. The walls felt like they were closing in, and I fought to keep my focus. “I’ll find out. You can’t keep lying to me.”

Searching for Answers

After the confrontation, I turned away, desperate for answers beyond my mother’s denials. I stumbled through the house, each shadow feeling like a reminder of Emily’s absence. I needed to know what really happened.

In the study, I opened drawers haphazardly, pushing aside old papers and forgotten memories. My fingers grazed something beneath a stack of papers. An envelope. I pulled it out, my pulse quickening as I read the hospital’s name printed on the front.

Inside, a discharge letter. I opened it with shaking hands, my breath hitching as the reality hit. “This is dated after her death,” I muttered, rereading the details that contradicted everything my mother had said. “Complications during childbirth? No mention of her dying!”

Just as a plan formed in my mind, Caleb’s voice cut through the air. “What have you got there, Dan?”

I turned to him, heart racing. “This—this letter says she was discharged. She didn’t die like Mom said.”

Caleb stepped closer, his eyes narrowing. “You don’t want to dig too deep. Trust me.”

“Why not?” I demanded, frustration boiling over. I couldn’t shake the feeling that he was hiding something. “What do you know?”

He hesitated, glancing back toward the living room. “Let’s just say… there are things about Mom you don’t know. Things that could change everything.”

His words hung in the air, thick with tension. My heart raced. What had I stumbled into?
