I Went to Family Dinner with a Lawyer and a Secret That Changed Everything About My Success and Their Love

I Went to Family Dinner with a Lawyer and a Secret That Changed Everything About My Success and Their Love Save

Arriving at My Parents' House

As I stepped into my parents' home, a wave of mixed emotions washed over me—excitement tinged with anger. The scent of Mom's famous lasagna wafted through the air, but it did little to soothe the knot in my stomach. They were gathered around the dining table, an uneasy silence hanging between us.

“Hey,” I said, forcing a smile, though it didn’t quite reach my eyes. They looked up, surprised, as I placed the framed newspaper article on the table, letting it slide into view. “Thought you might want to see this.”

The atmosphere shifted instantly, tension crackling like static electricity. I watched their faces, searching for a spark of recognition, a glimmer of pride. Instead, Dad studied the article with an indifference that made my heart race.

“Local Tech Founder, 29, Purchases $5.2 Million Penthouse Following Major Acquisition,” he read aloud, his tone flat. “Congratulations, I guess.”

Cody leaned in, curiosity mingled with something darker—a hint of resentment? “That’s a big deal, sis.” But his eyes darted between Dad and me, as if he wasn't sure how to act. Mom’s gaze flickered to the article and back to her plate, avoiding the moment entirely.

“You know, I thought you’d be happy,” I said, my voice tight. “This is what I worked for. Where were you at my graduation?”

Mom finally looked up, her expression unreadable. “We were there in spirit,” she murmured, but the words felt empty. I shook my head, feeling anger bubble beneath my skin. This wasn’t how it was supposed to go.

Unexpected Revelations

As they continued to read, Dad’s expression morphed from indifference to surprise. “I always knew you had potential,” he said, a hint of pride slipping through the cracks of his façade. It sounded rehearsed, almost forced.

Cody, eager to bolster Dad’s fragile compliment, quickly added, “Yeah! You really made something of yourself.” But his tone dripped with something deeper—resentment or perhaps jealousy.

Frustration surged through me. “Can we please talk about what happened? You guys missed a huge milestone in my life!”

But my words fell flat, drowned out by Dad’s enthusiasm over a new venture he wanted us to undertake together. I felt ignored, overlooked once again, as if my accomplishments meant nothing.

Suddenly, the doorbell rang, cutting through the heavy tension like a knife. I glanced at the clock—my surprise guest! My heart raced as I rushed to answer.

Just as I prepared to expose the truth, Cody burst in, accusing Frank of trying to manipulate me, which left me uncertain about who to trust.
