Confrontation in the Kitchen
After overhearing the call, my heart raced in my chest as Nathan walked into the kitchen, blissfully unaware of the storm brewing within me. The smell of spaghetti simmered on the stove, but it felt foreign. My kitchen had transformed into a courtroom, and he was about to take the stand.
"Hey, babe, what’s for dinner?" He asked, pulling me into a quick embrace.
I pulled away, searching his face for the truth. "Nathan, we need to talk." My voice was steady, but doubt crept into my stomach.
"About what? Did something happen?"
“I overheard something earlier. About you, your brother, and… Sarah.” The name hung in the air, a dark cloud ready to unleash.
His expression shifted, eyes narrowing. “Emily, come on. You’re being paranoid. There’s nothing going on.”
"But they were talking about you needing more time. What does that even mean?"
He took a step back, crossing his arms defensively. “You’re reading too much into this. It was a casual conversation. You know how families are.”
“Casual? They discussed my future as if I wasn’t even there!” I clenched my fists, fighting the hurt and betrayal. “What else are you hiding from me?”
"Nothing! I promise you, my love for you is real."
His words felt empty, echoing against the walls. I wanted to believe him, but a knot of distrust tightened in my chest. I felt my resolve wavering, but I jabbed back, “If that’s true, then why are they keeping secrets?”
He glanced away, a flicker of something—a shadow of guilt?—passed over his face. Was he hiding something monumental behind that smile?
“I’ll get us dinner,” he said abruptly, retreating to the stove, leaving me with a web of questions. As I watched him stir the sauce, unease crept in deeper. This wasn’t normal. My world was starting to fracture, and I had to find out the truth.
Unearthing the Past
After Nathan went to bed, I couldn’t shake off the gnawing feeling in my gut. Something wasn’t adding up, and I needed answers. I approached his work bag cautiously, my heart pounding with every movement. I promised myself I wouldn’t invade his privacy, but the fear of being blindsided again took precedence.
Inside the bag, I found his phone—unlocked, carelessly tossed aside. A wave of adrenaline surged through me as I scrolled through his messages.
"I miss you, Sarah. We need to talk about Sophie."
The words struck me like a physical blow. Sophie? Who was Sophie? I flipped through more messages, each one revealing a connection I’d never known existed.
Pictures emerged, snapshots of a life I wasn’t part of. There was Nathan, smiling alongside a woman I recognized only from the occasional mention at family gatherings: Sarah, his ex-wife. They looked happy, carefree in ways I had never seen between us.
"We need to handle the account together. It’s important."
My head spun. A joint bank account? Why hadn’t he ever mentioned this? Each discovery fueled my sense of betrayal, peeling back layers of deceit.
As I dug deeper, images poured forth—birthdays, vacations, small everyday moments. It was a life that had remained hidden from me, a life I had unknowingly stepped into while he was tethered to the past. But it was the last message that shattered me.
I tapped on an unread notification from Sarah. It read, “Are we still on for next week? I need to talk to you.”
My breath caught in my throat. Planning to meet her? The weight of the truth crashed around me, forcing me to question everything I thought I knew about my life, my marriage, and who Nathan truly was.
