Confronting the Truth
My heart raced as I gripped the steering wheel, the throbbing in my chest matching the rhythm of the windshield wipers. Jamie stared out the window, blissfully unaware of the storm brewing inside me. I couldn’t shake the words he had whispered: “Daddy says I’m not allowed to tell you what they do in your bedroom.”
Each memory of the last few months rolled through my mind like a film rewinding. Owen’s late-night phone calls in the garage, the locked spare bedroom, and that lingering scent of paint. How could I have been so blind? I parked in the driveway, my pulse quickening as I envisioned the confrontation ahead.
As I stepped out of the car, the chill of the evening air wrapped around me, but it was nothing compared to the cold dread sinking into my gut. I felt out of control, every step toward the front door feeling like I was slowly sinking into quicksand.
What had Owen done? And why had I trusted him? I imagined my voice cracking as I asked him for answers, as if simply saying the words would shatter the fragile illusion of our lives.
The Confrontation
As soon as I stepped inside, I found Owen in the kitchen, a casual smile on his face that felt like a taunt. The sight of him made my insides churn. I didn’t want to waste a moment. “We need to talk about Ivy,” I said, my voice sharper than I intended.
For a moment, he just looked at me, his expression shifting from surprise to calm. “What about her?” he asked, pouring a glass of water. The mundane act felt like an insult.
“Jamie knows about her.” My throat tightened. That was the breaking point, the line I had crossed. “He told me she goes upstairs with you when I’m at work.”
His face went pale, the glass almost slipping from his fingers. “That’s not what you think,” he started, but I pressed on.
“You expect me to believe it’s just art projects? You can’t deny it, Owen!” My heart thudded violently in my chest as he opened his mouth to defend himself. “You’ve been distant lately, and then suddenly, you have this friend?”
“Ivy is just helping me with some projects,” he insisted, but the conviction was fading from his voice. The truth flickered behind his eyes, and every moment stretched taut between us.
“If she’s just a friend, why hide her? Why lock that room?” I felt my breath quicken, my anger now mixed with desperation. We were teetering on the edge of something I couldn't grasp.
Then I dropped the bombshell. “Jamie thinks you’re having secret meetings in our bedroom.” His silence echoed in the room like thunder. I stormed out of the kitchen, needing to escape his gaze, but as I turned, I heard his phone buzz on the counter.
My heart seized as I glanced back. The message on his screen hinted at Ivy's emotional distress, something deeper lurking beneath the surface of their relationship. Confusion crashed over me, leaving me reeling.
