I brought my husband his favorite lunch after a year of missed dinners, broken promises, and nights when he never came home. At the hospital, his closest colleague looked at the lunch bag, began to cry, and whispered, “He hasn't told you anything, has he?”
My husband had been a surgeon for eleven years, and I had always accepted that emergencies came before birthdays, anniversaries, and ordinary evenings with our daughter. But this past year was different. He missed Thanksgiving, our anniversary, and our eight-year-old daughter's birthday. Sometimes I woke to find him sitting at the edge of our bed, shaking as he tried to hide his tears. “It's been a rough night,” he would say. I believed him because loving a doctor had taught me to make room for other people's emergencies.
That Tuesday I packed roast beef on sourdough, kettle chips, peach pie, and a handwritten note: You don't have to take care of everyone. Let me have a turn. I drove to Saint Catherine's Medical Center in Indianapolis, expecting to steal ten minutes with the man I missed. Instead, the nurses at the desk fell silent when I asked for him. Then his friend, Dr. Adrian Cole, approached with red eyes and an expression I had never seen on him before.
“Where's my husband?” I asked.
Adrian looked at the bag in my hands. “He hasn't told you anything, has he?”
“Told me what?”
He reached for my elbow and guided me away from the crowded corridor. Behind a closed consultation-room door, he finally said the words that made the floor seem to tilt beneath me. “Your husband isn't working today. He's a patient.”
I stared at him, waiting for a correction that never came. “He's been a patient here for months,” Adrian continued. “And yesterday something happened that means we can't keep letting him face this alone.”
I looked down at the lunch I'd prepared, at the little note folded beneath his fork. “Take me to him,” I whispered.
But Adrian hesitated. “First,” he said, “there's something he asked me to give you if this day ever came.”
Chapter 2: The Envelope
Adrian handed me a small, white envelope. My hands trembled as I took it from him. The envelope was sealed, my name written in my husband’s familiar, neat handwriting. I hesitated, looking up at Adrian.
“Open it,” he said softly. “He wanted you to know the truth.”
I tore open the envelope and unfolded the letter inside. My eyes scanned the words, my heart sinking with each line.
“My dearest Sarah,
I know this letter will come as a shock, but I need you to understand. For the past year, I’ve been battling a severe illness. It’s a rare condition, one that’s been draining my energy and causing me to miss so many important moments in our lives. I’ve been in and out of the hospital, often staying overnight to undergo treatments and tests. I’ve tried to keep it from you because I didn’t want to burden you or our daughter. But I’ve realized that I can’t keep doing this alone. I need your strength, your love, and your support.
Please forgive me for not telling you sooner. I love you more than words can express.
