Five days after my C-section, my husband handed me twelve dollars and told me to take a city bus home with our newborn while he drove his mother to lunch—in my luxury SUV. What Dominic never knew was that the “retired government employee” he dismissed as my father was actually four-star U.S. Army General Charles Brooks, and that one phone call from me was about to change everything.
I stood beneath the entrance of St. Vincent’s Hospital in Manhattan with five-day-old Leo sleeping against my chest. Every breath pulled at the incision across my abdomen, and even standing upright felt like someone was tightening wire beneath my skin.
“Dominic,” I whispered. “You seriously want me to take the bus?”
He glanced at his watch. “My mother is waiting for lunch. Don’t make this difficult, Audrey.”
Then he pressed folded bills into my palm.
Twelve dollars.
Behind him sat the black armored SUV my father had given me before our wedding. Dominic had gradually started treating it as his own because he liked arriving at investor meetings looking successful.
Then Victoria, my mother-in-law, walked out wearing designer sunglasses.
“Our reservation is in forty minutes,” she complained.
Dominic immediately opened the passenger door for her.
I almost laughed. He hadn’t opened a door for me once during my pregnancy.
“I need Leo’s diaper bag,” I said.
Dominic pulled it from the SUV and dropped it at my feet. When I tried to bend down, pain ripped across my abdomen so violently my vision blurred.
A nurse rushed forward. “Ma’am, don’t bend like that. You just had abdominal surgery.”
Dominic rolled his eyes.
“Can everyone stop turning this into a medical emergency?”
Something inside me went completely still.
Minutes later, he drove away with his mother, father, and sister laughing inside my SUV while I stood on the sidewalk holding our newborn.
A bus pulled up.
The driver saw my hospital bracelet and lowered the steps. An elderly woman immediately surrendered her seat.
Their kindness hurt worse than Dominic’s cruelty.
As Manhattan passed outside the window, I finally stopped making excuses for my marriage.
Dominic believed I was simply Audrey Brooks, daughter of an ordinary retired government worker.
I had deliberately allowed that misunderstanding.
My father was General Charles Brooks, a four-star Army general who had spent decades in combat commands, Pentagon leadership, and national-level strategic positions. Growing up, I learned that his name changed how people treated me, so when I met Dominic, I wanted him to love me—not my father’s influence.
Chapter 2: The Weight of Silence
From the bus, I called my best friend, Lisa, who was waiting for me at our apartment. She answered on the first ring.
“Audrey, how are you feeling? Is everything okay?”
My voice broke. “Lisa, can you come to the bus stop? I need help.”
She didn’t ask questions. “I’ll be right there.”
Ten minutes later, Lisa was hugging me and Leo, her face a mix of concern and anger. “What happened, Audrey?”
I told her everything, from the C-section to the twelve dollars. Lisa’s eyes narrowed. “That son of a—”
“Lisa, please. I just need to get home and rest.”
“You deserve better than this,” she said, her voice filled with determination. “We need to talk to your father.”
“No,” I whispered. “Not yet. I need to figure things out first.”
Lisa nodded, her expression softening. “Okay, but remember, you’re not alone.”
Back at the apartment, I placed Leo in his crib and collapsed on the couch. Lisa brought me a cup of tea and sat beside me.
“You don’t have to do this alone, Audrey. Let me help you.”
I closed my eyes, the weight of silence pressing down on me. “I know, Lisa. But part of me still hopes he’ll come back and apologize.”
She squeezed my hand. “Sometimes, we have to face the truth, no matter how painful it is.”
That night, as I held Leo, I realized that the pain of Dominic’s actions was only the beginning. The real test was to find the strength to move forward, with or without him.
Chapter 3: The Unseen Support
The next morning, I received a call from my father’s assistant. “General Brooks would like to see you, Miss Audrey. He’s concerned.”
I hesitated. “Tell him I’m fine.”
“He knows you better than that. He’s worried, and he wants to help.”
My resolve softened. “Tell him I’ll be there in an hour.”
At my father’s office, the familiar scent of polished wood and old books filled the air. Dad stood as I entered, his eyes scanning me with a mix of concern and pride.
“Audrey, what’s going on?” he asked, his voice gentle yet firm.
I told him everything, from the C-section to the bus ride. His face darkened with anger, but he controlled it, as he always did.
“Why didn’t you tell me sooner?” he asked, his voice low.
“I wanted to handle it myself. I wanted to show Dominic that I’m more than just his wife. I wanted to show him that I’m strong.”
“You are strong, Audrey. But you don’t have to prove it to him. You’ve already proven it to yourself and to me.”
He stepped closer, his eyes filled with a father’s love. “I’ve had my people looking into Dominic’s background. There are things you should know.”
“What things?” I asked, my heart pounding.
“Dominic has a history of financial misdeeds. He’s been involved in several questionable investments and has a pattern of treating women poorly.”
The words hit me like a punch. “I trusted him.”
“I know, sweetheart. But now you know the truth. And you have a choice to make.”
I nodded, the weight of his words sinking in. “What do you suggest, Dad?”
“Let’s have a conversation with Dominic. Let’s make him see what he’s lost.”
Chapter 4: The Confrontation
With my father’s support, I called Dominic and asked him to come to the apartment. He arrived an hour later, his demeanor aloof and dismissive.
“What’s this about, Audrey?” he asked, his eyes scanning the room.
I stood tall, Leo in my arms. “We need to talk about what happened at the hospital.”
“I was busy. My mother wanted to have lunch.”
“You left me on the sidewalk with a newborn and twelve dollars. You treated me like I was nothing.”
He shrugged. “You’re overreacting. It was just a bus ride.”
My father stepped into the room, his presence commanding. “Is that how you treat the woman who just gave you a child?”
Dominic’s eyes widened. “General Brooks?”
“Yes, Dominic. Your wife’s father is a four-star Army general. And I have a few things to say to you.”
Dominic’s face paled. “I didn’t know. I swear, I had no idea.”
“That’s not the only thing you didn’t know,” my father continued. “We’ve been looking into your background. Your financial history is questionable, and your treatment of women is deplorable.”
Dominic’s defenses crumbled. “I can change. I’ll do better. I promise.”
I looked at him, my heart heavy. “It’s too late for promises, Dominic. You’ve already shown me who you are.”
He hung his head. “I’m sorry, Audrey. I really am.”
“Sorry isn’t enough,” I said, my voice firm. “You need to leave. Now.”
Dominic hesitated, then nodded. “I’ll be gone by tonight.”
As he left, I felt a mix of relief and sadness. The chapter with Dominic was closing, but the journey of healing had only just begun.
Chapter 5: A New Beginning
The days that followed were a whirlwind of emotions and decisions. With my father’s support, I filed for divorce and took steps to protect our assets and Leo’s future. Lisa stood by my side, offering a shoulder to cry on and a voice of reason.
One evening, as I sat on the couch with Leo, I felt a sense of peace. The pain of Dominic’s actions was still there, but it was no longer the defining force in my life.
My father called to check on us. “How are you doing, Audrey?”
“I’m okay, Dad. Better than I thought I’d be.”
“I’m proud of you, sweetheart. You’ve shown incredible strength and resilience.”
“Thank you, Dad. I couldn’t have done it without you and Lisa.”
“You’re not alone, Audrey. We’re here for you, always.”
I hung up, feeling a warmth in my heart. The road ahead was uncertain, but I was ready to face it. Leo cooed in my arms, his innocent eyes full of trust.
“We’re going to be okay, Leo,” I whispered. “Together, we’ll build a new beginning.”
The sun set over the city, casting a golden glow through the window. In that moment, I knew that no matter what challenges lay ahead, I had the strength to overcome them. And with the love of my family and friends, I would find the path to a brighter future.
