I Never Expected a Child’s Question to Unravel the Dark Secret Hidden in My Family’s Rosewood Pendant

I Never Expected a Child’s Question to Unravel the Dark Secret Hidden in My Family’s Rosewood Pendant

The Rose on My Throat

“Your pendant… it looks just like my mother’s,” the little girl whispered, eyes locked onto the ruby rose at my throat.

Heat rose off the cracked sidewalk, the market’s clamor a low roar as I lifted the tin bucket.

“Do you want a rose, ma’am?” she asked, hands trembling around the metal.

“Of course, sweetheart,” I answered, smiling despite the cold that slid down my spine.

I slipped a single red rose from the bucket, the stem slick with dew, and pressed it to her palm.

When the gold chain brushed her wrist, the pendant slipped from beneath my blouse, landing against my throat. The ruby caught the sun, a droplet of blood.

The weight settled there, sudden and unfamiliar, as if a stone had been dropped into my skin.

Maya’s small face twisted with certainty. “Ma’am… your pendant looks just like my mom’s,” she breathed.

I laughed politely, the kind I use with strangers. “No, sweetheart. This is my family’s pendant.”

Her knuckles whitened around the bucket. “Does it say Rosewood on the back?” she asked, eyes flicking up, daring me to deny it.

The word hung, a name I’d hidden for decades. “Rosewood…” I whispered, tasting ash.

Her smile vanished, replaced by a seriousness too old for a child. Braided blond hair fell over a solemn mouth.

Maya’s Question and the Woman in the Faded Coat

“Where is your mom now?” I asked, voice softer than the market’s din.

She glanced across the street, where a woman in a faded coat stood watching the crowd, eyes never meeting Maya’s.

“She’s across the street,” Maya said, a faint smile forming. “But she told me if I ever saw that pendant, I had to ask your name first.”

The air seemed to thicken, the ruby pulsing against my skin.

“What’s your name?” Maya pressed, voice steady.

“Elena,” I answered, the syllable tasting like iron.

She nodded, then pointed sharply toward the woman. “She knows.”

The woman in the coat stepped forward, her movements deliberate, the fabric whispering against the bustling backdrop.

She lifted a faded hand, revealing an old leather diary, its corners softened by time.

“Take this,” she said, voice low, “it will tell you why the Rosewood pendant has followed you.”

My fingers brushed the diary’s cover, and the market seemed to hold its breath.

Confronting Lila

“She’s across the street,” Maya whispered, her small finger pointing at a woman in a faded coat.

I turned, the market’s clamor fading into a low hum as I stared at Lila, her coat frayed, eyes fixed on the stalls like she’d seen ghosts.

“Excuse me,” I said, voice steadier than I felt, “are you Maya’s mother?”

She lifted her gaze, a flicker of recognition crossing her lined face before she composed herself.

“I am,” she replied, voice soft, almost apologetic.
